About Me

as a PhD Student

Jose Nateras (he/him) is a PhD student at UCLA in Theater & Performance Studies. His research concerns the performance of horror in relation to marginalized identities. Jose has his BA in Theatre from Loyola University Chicago and his MFA in Writing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Alongside experience teaching (SAIC, Truman College Chicago), Jose is a published novelist, playwright, accomplished screenwriter/filmmaker, and has a career acting on both stage and screen (SAG-AFTRA/AEA). Jose looks to bring an interdisciplinary and cross-genre approach to examining how horror performs as a tool for Queer and BIPOC survival. His current project applies monster theory and performance studies to consider the ways in which the vampire can allow for new understandings of Latinidad within the United States.
